About the job
Internship Avalanche Warning Service 100% (m/f/d) – Focus on Avalanche Accidents
The Avalanche and Prevention Research Unit studies the formation and dynamics of avalanches, develops and operates prevention and early warning systems for alpine natural hazards, and offers a 6-month internship for the upcoming winter season 2026/2027
You will support us in the analysis of avalanche accidents, in the recording, maintenance and evaluation of avalanche data, and in fieldwork such as snow profile measurements. Furthermore, you will contribute to writing AvaBlogs or social media posts. You will also actively participate in conducting snow and avalanche courses. If needed, you will support other teams at the institute and take on diverse, exciting tasks.
You hold a bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline and have good skills in data processing (e.g. Python or R). You bring experience in assessing avalanche danger – for example through regular touring activities, as a tour leader, J+S leader, or through your own ski tours. You move confidently in the terrain with skis (or splitboard), work independently, precisely and reliably. Flexibility and willingness to occasionally work at weekends are expected. Good knowledge of a second national language (French or Italian) is desirable.
Please send your complete application to Clemens Güdel, Human Resources WSL/SLF, by submitting the required documents via our application portal. Applications by e-mail or post will not be considered. For questions, Thomas Stucki, Team Leader Avalanche Warning Service, Tel. +41 (0)81 417 01 22, will be happy to assist you.
At WSL, diversity and inclusion are lived values. We are committed to gender equality and to promoting an open and inclusive working environment.
