To support research and teaching, the IT Services of ETH Zurich operate as a service organization in a large and complex IT environment. We offer the members of ETH Zurich high-quality, flexible, and scalable IT services and thus support them in competing with the world’s best universities.
The services of the ID Applications (APPS) section include e-mail, groupware (collaborative software solutions), as well as hosting of websites, databases, and applications. The portfolio also includes the design, implementation, and further development of various systems (central operational information system, Identity & Access Management, SAP-ERP, Web Content Management, as well as solutions for teaching development/technology and the departments) of ETH Zurich.
The ID-Hosting group is responsible for operating web platforms (Adobe AEM, WordPress, wikis, preconfigured LAMP environments), directories (OpenLDAP, Shibboleth Identity Provider), databases (MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL), a large number of web applications in the teaching area, as well as the SAP infrastructure.
Job description
For the further development of our technical platforms, we are looking for a responsible and experienced personality as Senior Linux System Engineer to start immediately or by arrangement. In this position, you will take on a central role in building and strategically further developing our modern infrastructure and container as well as cloud environments. You actively shape solutions, make technical decisions, and sustainably influence our system architecture.
Your area of responsibility includes the professional setup, operation, and further development of our Kubernetes clusters. You work closely with the development teams and provide a stable, secure, and scalable platform. In addition, you are responsible for the reliable operation of our OpenLDAP infrastructure as well as the administration, maintenance, and optimization of the Linux systems. Through targeted use of automation, you sustainably increase efficiency and quality in operations.
You are responsible for the availability of the services and ensure stable operation throughout the entire system lifecycle. This includes monitoring the platforms, analyzing and resolving disruptions, as well as developing sustainable solutions. With your technical know-how and experience, you initiate and implement continuous improvements and thus make a significant contribution to the technical advancement of our company.
Profile
For this responsible position, you bring solid training and several years of experience in the professional operation of complex IT infrastructures. We expect:
- A completed training in system technology or a university or university of applied sciences degree in computer science or a related field
- Several years of professional experience as a Linux System Engineer or administrator, ideally in the Red Hat environment
- Deep expertise in container technologies and Kubernetes administration
- Very good scripting skills (e.g., Bash, Perl, or Python) and experience in automating operational processes
- Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code, DevOps concepts, or agile working methods (advantageous)
- Strong analytical and interconnected thinking as well as a structured and solution-oriented working style
- High customer orientation and the ability to sustainably solve technical challenges
- Willingness to take responsibility and actively advance the team with expertise
- Enjoyment in sharing knowledge and supporting others professionally
- Teamwork skills and convincing communication in German and English (spoken and written)
