The University Library Basel (UB Basel) with its five locations is one of the most important public information centres in the region. With a collection of 6 million printed and 3.5 million electronic media, half a million visitors annually, and its significant historical collection dating back to the 8th century, it is one of the major scientific libraries in Switzerland. At the same time, it serves as the cantonal library of Basel-Stadt and is accessible to the public. In its role as a mediator between science and society, it offers various stakeholders a versatile space for learning and encounters.
You will be part of the Atelier Conservation & Bookbinding team within the Historical Collections department of the University Library Basel. The Conservation department is responsible for the long-term preservation and care of the entire physical collection of the University Library at its various locations – with regard to both current and future use.
Your tasks
- Preparation, coordination, awarding and quality control of binding orders to external bookbinding workshops
- Carrying out repair and restoration work on damaged books from the historical collection of UB Basel
- Support with simple conservation measures for collection preservation (e.g. dry cleaning)
- Print finishing and provision of bookbinding services within the library (e.g. trimming print orders, mounting posters, laminating documents, as well as making boxes and other special tasks)
- Creation and maintenance of work instructions and documentation
- Management of the materials warehouse, emergency equipment (e.g. mould boxes) and technical devices of the Conservation department
- Conducting short practical introductions to simple bookbinding tasks for trainees and interns
Your profile
- Completed training as a print media processor specialising in bookbinding or a comparable qualification
- Several years of professional experience in the bookbinding environment
- Independent, structured and solution-oriented working style as well as high personal responsibility
- Initiative, flexible and team-oriented personality
- Interest in conservation topics and willingness to integrate conservation aspects into bookbinding activities
- Experience in manual execution of stabilising conservation work is an advantage
- Enjoyment in passing on expertise and teaching practical skills
