The Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) constitute the main hospital establishment in the canton of Geneva. They fulfil missions of care, teaching, and research, and are actively involved in the training of future professionals.
Within this framework, the HUG offer a pre-HES internship in Life Sciences Engineering, aimed at admission to the Bachelor of Science HES-SO in Life Sciences Engineering at HES-SO Valais-Wallis – School of Engineering.
This internship allows the intern to concretely discover the operation of a hospital laboratory, become familiar with working methods in a professional environment, and develop practical skills in the field of life sciences.
Job Description
Within the Clinical Pathology Service of the HUG, you will join the Tissue and Cellular Pathology Laboratory team and discover the various stages of handling, processing, and analysing biological samples in histology and cytology.
As part of your internship, you will participate, under the supervision of qualified professionals, in the practical and technical activities of the anatomical pathology laboratory. You will thus become aware of the organisation of a laboratory, working methods, analytical processes, as well as the requirements regarding quality, safety, and traceability.
You will discover and take part in the different stages of tissue preparation, including fixation, dehydration, paraffin embedding, and the making of histological sections.
You will participate in slide preparation and their digitisation and discover the main staining techniques used in anatomical pathology.
You will learn the principles and applications of various analytical techniques used in pathology, notably immunohistochemistry.
You will discover the quality control principles applied to the different stages of analysis processes.
You will attend laboratory meetings and training seminars to better understand the organisation of the laboratory, work processes, and the links between different activities.
You will apply hygiene, safety, quality, confidentiality, and environmental protection rules specific to a medical laboratory.
During this internship, you will develop rigorous working methods, your autonomy, and your ability to work in a team. You will become familiar with the organisation and requirements of a specialised laboratory and concretely discover the various professions and skills necessary for its operation.
This experience will help you better understand the professional reality of a hospital laboratory and confirm your interest in training in the field of Life Sciences Engineering.
Qualifications
You meet the admission requirements or are in the process of applying for the Bachelor of Science HES-SO in Life Sciences Engineering at HES-SO Valais-Wallis – School of Engineering.
You have a good basic knowledge of natural sciences, particularly biology, chemistry, and/or physics.
You demonstrate a genuine interest in life sciences, laboratory techniques, and scientific applications.
You are a curious, motivated person wishing to concretely discover the operation of a professional laboratory.
You show rigour, precision, and good analytical skills.
You possess the ability to work in a team and can adapt to a professional environment.
You are sensitive to issues of safety, quality, and sustainability in the context of laboratory work.
Job Particularities
This internship aims to allow the intern to face the professional reality of a laboratory and acquire the basic techniques and methods of working in a company or laboratory.
The proposed activity notably allows the development of knowledge in analytics and quality control, as well as familiarisation with the methods and processes used in a specialised laboratory.
Your supervision is provided by qualified and experienced professionals, aware of the internship objectives and the support of interns.
You will work in a demanding scientific and technical environment, fostering learning, autonomy, and the development of practical skills.
You will discover the organisation and operation of a laboratory, the various professions represented there, as well as the requirements related to quality, safety, traceability, and confidentiality.
This experience will help you develop confidence in your abilities and confirm your interest in a Bachelor HES-SO training in Life Sciences Engineering.
