CategoryPositionWith its structured doctoral programs, the CUSO (Conférence des Universités de Suisse occidentale - Conference of Western Swiss Universities) aims to consolidate the supervision and further education of doctoral candidates at its universities and to create optimal conditions for networking among doctoral students. The doctoral program in German language and literature implements this structural strengthening taking into account the institutional and disciplinary-historical particularities of the field of German studies. According to the three subfields of German studies, the structure of the doctoral program is divided into three submodules: A. Linguistics, B. Modern German Literature, and C. Older German Literature or Germanic Medieval Studies. A fourth module D includes interdisciplinary offerings, for example on methodological issues or on career perspectives for graduated Germanists. The activities are planned and organized in collaboration with the doctoral candidates.
The content responsibility lies with a committee consisting of representatives of the three Germanistic subfields. The members of the committee are (as of March 2022): Prof. Dr. Cornelia Herberichs (Freiburg, Medieval Studies), Prof. Dr. Melanie Rohner (Bern, Modern German Literature), Prof. Dr. Regula Schmidlin (Freiburg, Linguistics), Prof. Dr. Peter Schnyder (Neuchâtel, Modern German Literature), Prof. Dr. Juliane Schröter (Geneva, Linguistics), Prof. Dr. Hans-Georg von Arburg (Lausanne, Modern German Literature), Prof. Dr. Christine Weder (Geneva, Modern German Literature); Representatives of the doctoral candidates: Josephina Bierl (Lausanne, Modern German Literature), Adela Sabban (Freiburg, Modern German Literature), Marc-Oliver Ubl (Bern, Linguistics), Peter Wittemann (Geneva, Modern German Literature).
The doctoral program in German language and literature has been in effect since January 1, 2011. For the first term (2011-2015), the program management was held by Hans-Georg von Arburg, for the second term (2015-2019) by Regula Schmidlin. Since January 2020, the program management has been with Cornelia Herberichs.
