As a structural demolition specialist, you create openings and breakthroughs in buildings. You cut, mill, drill, and saw concrete and other building materials. For this, you use special diamond tools. You dismantle and properly dispose of the removed parts.
Tasks
- Read and understand plans
- Measure sizes of various building components and enter them in the plans to the correct scale
- Mark components to be cut using levelling devices, i.e. devices for determining height differences, or laser devices
- Prepare the necessary machines and tools, such as saws, drills, or milling machines
- Secure the workplace according to safety standards, for example by setting up signs and barriers or securing scaffolding
- Determine exact positions for building openings, such as doors, windows, lifts, or shafts
- Ensure the workplace does not get wet, for example with pumps, water drains, or protective walls against water splashes
- Set up protective devices to prevent dust from spreading everywhere
- Operate machines and tools to work on concrete, for example with diamond drills or saws
- Continuously monitor progress and quality of the work
- Demolish buildings or parts of buildings with various machines, for example with electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic tools
- Dispose of or recycle dismantled material and other construction waste in an environmentally friendly manner
- Write work reports
- Clean and maintain machines
Work Environment
As a structural demolition specialist, you work independently on new builds or renovations. Since the environment on construction sites is noisy and dusty, you wear a respiratory mask, safety helmet, and safety goggles. Your working hours are regular.
You work in small and medium-sized companies specialised in drilling, sawing, and concrete cutting. After several years of professional experience and appropriate further training, you can take on leadership positions, such as construction foreman or site supervisor.

Training
Practical training in a concrete drilling and cutting company: 4 days per week
1 day per week at the vocational school in Zofingen (AG)
Bellach (SO): 60 days over 3 years

Compulsory schooling completed
With very good school performance, apprentices can additionally attend the vocational baccalaureate school.
