The Volkshaus Zürich has been a vibrant meeting place in the heart of the city of Zurich for over a hundred years. With its halls and meeting rooms, the Volkshaus offers space for around 2,200 events annually. Concerts, festivals, conferences, assemblies, banquets, and courses take place at the Volkshaus. At the same time, the Volkshaus Foundation manages and rents out various residential and commercial spaces, including areas for a restaurant, a bookshop, and a hammam.
For the operational management and further development of the Volkshaus, we are looking for a committed individual as
Managing Director (100%)
In this role, you will be responsible for the operation of the Volkshaus and the Foundation and will develop it further together with the foundation bodies and employees. You combine business management expertise with the social mission and the special character of the house.
Your main tasks include:
- Leading and further developing the Volkshaus administration and its approximately 10 employees in the office and halls
- Overall responsibility for finances (budgeting, controlling, and annual accounts)
- Responsibility for the rental and management of the halls and meeting rooms as well as the residential and commercial spaces
- Ensuring a professional event operation
- Supporting maintenance, renovation, and conversion projects
- Collaboration and negotiations with tenants, organisers, partner organisations, suppliers, and authorities
- Preparation of matters and meetings of the Board of Trustees and Operations Committee as well as implementation of the corresponding resolutions
- Maintenance and further development of the Volkshaus in accordance with the mission statement
For this versatile role, we are looking for an independent, responsible, and communicative leader with high social competence and strong implementation skills.
Ideally, you bring the following:
- Solid commercial and business management education
- Several years of leadership and personnel responsibility
- Experience in the financial and operational management of an organisation
- Experience in real estate, building operations, and construction-related issues
- Understanding of the particularities of a foundation as a non-profit organisation
- Organisational and communication skills and the ability to bring together diverse tasks and stakeholders
- Ability to think strategically while taking responsibility for a diverse operational business
- Fluent German and good English skills
- Confidence in using modern digital work tools
Experience in the events, real estate, or NPO environment is an advantage.
