Scientific Staff Member Particle Measurement Technology (80-100%)
University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland FHNW, Institute of Sensor Technology and Electronics
To strengthen our team, we are looking for a scientific staff member for the Innosuisse-funded innovation project "picoG: mass, size and shape of micrometre particles". The project runs for 30 months. Together with the ETH spin-off femtoG AG, we are further developing a novel particle analyser. It determines for the first time the mass, aerodynamic diameter and shape of individual particles in the micrometre range in a single measurement process. The technology is intended to be used in process monitoring, for example in powder production, battery materials and the food industry, as well as for the detection of fibres and asbestos. The project is supported by Büchi Labortechnik, Danone, SUVA and other industrial partners.
Your tasks:
- Development and optimisation of an existing novel particle measurement system
- Conducting CFD flow and particle simulations
- Development and characterisation of optical measurement systems
- Signal processing of piezoelectric sensors
- Development of algorithms for data evaluation
- Construction, testing and validation of prototypes
- Conducting laboratory and field measurements
- Calibration and comparative measurements with reference instruments
- Collaboration with industrial partners
- Participation in scientific publications and conference contributions
- Support in supervising student projects
Your profile:
- University degree (MSc or PhD) in physics, electrical engineering, process engineering, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, microtechnology or a related field
- Experience in experimental research and instrument development
- Candidates with a doctorate and/or professional experience in relevant fields are preferred
- Solid knowledge in fluid mechanics and aerosol and particle measurement technology (e.g. impaction, particle transport, dispersion)
- Programming experience for data acquisition and data evaluation (e.g. Python, Matlab)
Advantages include, among others:
- Know-how in sensor technology, measurement technology, signal processing
- Experience with CFD (COMSOL), optics, laser measurement technology or analogue electronics
- Enjoyment of CAD, rapid prototyping and the development of innovative products
- Experience with aerosol reference instruments or powder characterisation
- Creative, independent and solution-oriented working style
- Good English skills
We offer:
- Participation in an exciting research and development project funded by Innosuisse with high scientific and industrial relevance
- Modernly equipped research infrastructure at the Institute of Sensor Technology and Electronics
- Close collaboration with femtoG AG as well as international industrial and research partners
- Opportunity to publish scientific results and present at international conferences
- Flexible working conditions and a dedicated research team
The position is project-based and initially limited to 2.5 years.
Teaching at FHNW is the interface between education, professional activity and continuing professional development – challenging and at the same time meaningful. It enables staff to impart knowledge in a practical way and to directly implement research results. At the same time, the exchange with students in education and further training broadens and inspires the view of one’s own field.
Will you soon be part of our team? We look forward to receiving your application by 31 October 2026.
