State Archivist
Cultural Office / 80-100% / Chur
As a section of the Cultural Office, the State Archive of Graubünden is responsible for preserving and advancing the historical tradition of the canton. It supports and promotes the use of archival holdings, which cover about 800 years of history, by the interested public and for historical research purposes. Furthermore, the State Archive serves legal certainty and advises the cantonal administration on records management and information management. Important projects are currently underway, including the development of a building culture archive and the planned survey of the Rhaetian Railway archive.
Following the retirement of the current position holder, we are looking for a person with strong communication skills to lead the State Archive as a user-oriented service center starting October 1, 2026, or by agreement.
Responsibilities
- Further develops the State Archive strategically based on legal foundations and the state of archival science and leads the motivated and competent team of about 13 employees.
- Ensures the building, financial, and personnel resources the State Archive needs to fulfill its legally assigned tasks.
- Represents the State Archive within the cantonal administration, where it performs a cross-functional role, and in relation to other interest groups.
- Supervises public archival institutions in the canton (municipal and regional archives).
- In collaboration with significant historical research institutions, develops, promotes, and supports important scientific and cultural projects.
- Promotes the dissemination of Graubünden history as guiding knowledge at educational institutions and among the public.
What we expect from you
- Completed studies in cultural sciences or law, preferably in history.
- Completed postgraduate studies in archival sciences or significant practical experience gained at a large public archival institution.
- Advanced knowledge of the digital world.
- Ability to develop strategic goals and concepts as well as to lead and implement challenging projects. Leadership experience is desirable.
- Represents archival specialist requirements within the cantonal administration and in relation to other interest groups with social skills, persuasively and convincingly.
- Communicates appropriately in writing and orally to the target audience, skillfully and precisely.
- Knowledge of Graubünden history is desirable.
- Knowledge of multiple cantonal languages is an advantage.
