Context and mission
Swissnoso, the national centre for the prevention of nosocomial infections, has been mandating prospective surveillance of surgical site infections (SSI) in Swiss hospitals since 2009.
Epidemiological surveillance of SSIs is a prospective method of monitoring operated patients in order to detect and diagnose infections according to a validated method based on international clinical criteria. It constitutes a continuous activity of data collection, analysis, interpretation and feedback of results.
The nurse in charge of surgical site infection surveillance actively monitors post-operative patients to detect infections according to a validated method based on clinical and international criteria. She works under the supervision of the HPCI manager.
Main tasks
• Actively monitor the clinical progress of operated patients (hospital follow-up, post-discharge up to 30-90 days, telephone interviews, record review).
• Enter standardised data (patients, interventions, infections) on the Swissnoso platform and validate infectious cases under the supervision of the HPCI manager.
• Participate in mandatory Swissnoso training (introduction and annual workshops).
Required education and qualifications
• Nursing diploma
• At least 2 years of experience in surgery or operating theatre
• Activity rate: 20%

• Mastery of surgical protocols: patient preparation for surgery, reading and understanding operative reports and anaesthesia sheets
• Data analysis skills
• Ease in communication
• Autonomy, rigour and cross-functional work
