Who are we?

The Archaeological Service of the State of Fribourg (SAEF) identifies, inventories and records archaeological cultural assets.

It supports the administrative procedure concerning remains located within archaeological perimeters and implements excavations and, where appropriate, measures to preserve the remains. It promotes the documentation produced in the form of publications. To raise awareness among various audiences about archaeological heritage, the Service organises open days, lectures and exhibitions and participates in training.

Your tasks

• You work under the supervision of the sector head and in collaboration with the technical and scientific staff of the sector
• On site, you contribute to the clearing of remains and ensure their plan/section recording
• As part of post-excavation work, you scan field notes and collaborate with scientific and technical staff to tidy up the records and produce plans
• For the preparation of studies, you produce scientific drawings of all types of movable and immovable archaeological remains, from sketches to publishable illustrations, in collaboration with scientific staff
• On request, you may be required to design historical reconstructions (landscapes, buildings, scenes of life)

Desired profile

• You hold a Federal VET Diploma and a higher ES complementary training as a designer, graphic designer, illustrator or equivalent. Your professional experience demonstrates a strong interest in scientific drawing, ideally in the archaeological or heritage field
• You have proven experience in archaeology, particularly in graphic documentation tasks not only on site but also for valorisation (plans/furniture)
• You master common graphic applications, notably the Adobe suite. You have good knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS) and/or digital photogrammetry. You also master an office suite and common web browsing
• You show a positive character and display the willingness to integrate and work in a team, while being able to show initiative and autonomy
• You hold a driving licence and ideally have a vehicle
• You master the French or German language and have good knowledge of the other language
