Community Interpreter (10-100 %)
Our Department of Migration & Integration in Romandy – a branch of Caritas Switzerland in Fribourg employing around a hundred staff members – is responsible for the support and integration of recognized refugees in the canton of Fribourg. By cantonal mandate, we welcome newcomers to our home in Matran, assist them in finding their own housing, provide personal and material assistance according to social aid standards, and support them in their steps towards professional and social integration.
Additionally, we manage an active community interpreting service in several Romandy cantons as well as a listening and counseling service against racism for the residents of the canton of Fribourg. Our community interpreting service "se comprendre" is active in the cantons of Fribourg, Jura, and the French-speaking part of the canton of Bern. Its mission is to enable communication between non-native speakers and institutions in the fields of health, social services, asylum, education/schooling, and justice. It consists of a small administrative team and over 130 interpreters/intercultural mediators. We are currently looking for interpreters for the following languages and regions:
- Amharic (Jura bernois)
- English (Fribourg)
- Dari (Fribourg)
- Khmer/Cambodian (Fribourg)
- Pashto (Fribourg, Jura, and Jura bernois)
- Romanian (Fribourg, towards French AND German)
- Somali (Fribourg, Jura)
- Swiss German and German (Fribourg)
- Tamil (Fribourg and Jura)
- Thai (Fribourg, Jura, and Jura bernois)
Your tasks
- You ensure interventions in intercultural interpreting mandated by the service "se comprendre" (in person and/or by phone/video conference) in the fields of health, social services, asylum, education/schooling, and justice
- You are responsible for a complete, comprehensive, and faithful translation between the interlocutors while respecting confidentiality and professional ethics
- You participate in information and exchange meetings, internal continuing education, and supervision
Our requirements
- Your native language is referenced above and you live in the indicated canton
- You have completed your professional training and possess a good general culture
- You have very good knowledge of French (ideally level C1, at least level B2 of the European Language Portfolio ELP)
- You already have experience in oral interpreting
- You hold the INTERPRET certificate or are interested in obtaining it
- You are comfortable with common computer tools, have access to the Internet, and own a smartphone
- You have great availability during the day on weekdays
- Your strengths include a sense of responsibility, reliability, punctuality, flexibility, discretion, and you possess good administrative skills
Start date: Immediately or to be agreed upon
Activity rate: On call and according to languages: 10-100 %
