About the Project
In everyday language, we talk about markets and marketplaces, which are two arenas of trade. Marketplaces have been central places of trade for millennia. In the past, they were located in the heart of cities and were not only venues for economic transactions but also meeting points for social life, politics, and exchange. Today, trade has changed significantly: Many transactions no longer take place in physical locations but online.
This project examines how trade on marketplaces – both analog and online – works. Even though modern markets and online trade seem to have replaced the classic marketplace, it is assumed that there is a historical line between traditional marketplaces and today's digital marketplaces.
