About the job
The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL, with around 600 employees, is part of the ETH domain. It deals with the sustainable use and protection of the environment as well as responsible management of natural hazards.
Scientific Assistant Spatial Planning 80 – 100 % (m/f/d)
The research unit Landscape Dynamics investigates patterns, causes and processes of landscape change. As part of a project to implement the sprawl indicator, the Land Use Systems research group is looking for a from 1 February 2027 for a period of eight months
Together with the Federal Office for Spatial Development and other partners, WSL has developed an indicator that can measure the degree of sprawl in various spatial perimeters, from one hectare to the whole of Switzerland. This indicator is very well established in Switzerland's monitoring systems ( www.are.admin.ch/zersiedelung ), but also has great potential for local and regional spatial planning. Its practical use is to be supported by guidelines and workshops.
Your tasks include preparing the necessary course materials and conducting corresponding practical workshops. For this, you will assess the needs of the target groups through interviews and develop illustrative practical examples for using the indicator in planning scenarios with the corresponding QGIS plugin. You will prepare the course materials in German and French and establish a network with practitioners to conduct 4 – 6 practical workshops in German and French.
You hold a Master’s degree in Geography or a related field. You are well acquainted with Swiss spatial planning and have in-depth experience with spatial analyses using QGIS. You speak fluent German and have good knowledge of French . Experience in teaching and organising workshops is an advantage. You work independently, have good organisational and communication skills, and are highly motivated to collaborate with planning practitioners.
