The Penitentiary System and Reintegration (JuWe) is part of the Directorate of Justice and the Interior of the Canton of Zurich and is responsible for criminal and measure enforcement as well as the implementation of various types of detention. For our 1,400 employees from around 40 professions, the successful social reintegration of offenders and the prevention of recidivism are of particular importance.
The newly established main department Medical Service ensures the medical-somatic basic care for the incarcerated persons in all penitentiary institutions of the Canton of Zurich. As a central organisational unit, it guarantees a harmonised and high-quality healthcare provision according to the equivalence principle and works closely with the Psychiatric-Psychological Service and the JuWe institutions.
The main department operates as an outpatient medical institution and Spitex institution with the corresponding health police permit and ensures the billing of medical and nursing services according to the mandatory health insurance.
For medical care at our locations (exact location(s) to be agreed), we are looking for a committed medical professional who ensures location-specific care.

- In your regular medical consultations, you diagnose and treat the incarcerated and provide initial medical care in urgent situations
- You participate in case discussions and work closely with the medical site management as well as representatives of other professional groups, with clearly defined task distribution and interfaces
- You ensure the quality of medical care, promote compliance with medical standards and implement preventive measures to maintain the health of the incarcerated persons
- You prepare medical reports, record services and document treatments according to legal requirements
This is what you bring
- You have completed your medical studies and ideally completed specialist training in General Internal Medicine. Additional experience in psychiatry, addiction medicine or emergency medicine is an advantage
- You have at least three years of professional experience at a recognised training institution in Switzerland
- You hold a verifiable professional practice licence as a doctor in the Canton of Zurich and have an impeccable reputation. You are also willing to take on on-call duties
- Negotiation-level German language skills are required for this position; knowledge of additional languages is an advantage
- Good MS Office skills and willingness to familiarise yourself with new health information systems
- You have high social competence in dealing with the specific clientele and experience in interprofessional collaboration
This awaits you
- A medically demanding and versatile activity with exciting case spectra and high personal responsibility
- The opportunity to actively shape medical care in a newly created organisational structure and to contribute innovative approaches
- An interdisciplinary team of highly qualified professionals and a collegial working environment
- Attractive employment conditions according to cantonal guidelines with an above-average good work-life balance, flexible working hours and predictable shifts as well as comprehensive training opportunities
- The shifts are usually during the day and only occasionally at night
