The Office for Archaeology of the Canton of Fribourg (AAFR) identifies, inventories and documents archaeological cultural assets. It oversees the administrative procedures concerning archaeological monuments located in archaeological zones and provides resources to conduct excavations and, if necessary, to preserve archaeological monuments. It enhances the created documentation through publications. To raise awareness among various target groups about the richness of the archaeological heritage, the Office organises open days as well as lectures and exhibitions; it also participates in training.

Your tasks

• You will work under the supervision of the sector head and in collaboration with the technical and scientific staff of the sector.
• On site, you will contribute to the uncovering of finds and be responsible for their graphic recording in plan/profile.
• As part of post-excavation work, you will scan the field protocols and collaborate with the scientific and technical staff on the final drawing of the records and the creation of plans.
• For the execution of studies, you will produce scientific drawings of all types of movable and immovable archaeological finds, from pencil sketches to publication-ready illustrations, in collaboration with the scientific staff.
• Upon request, you may be entrusted with the design of historical reconstructions (landscapes, buildings, everyday scenes).

Desired profile

• You have a Federal VET Diploma (EFZ) as well as a higher vocational training (HF) as a designer, graphic artist, illustrator or an equivalent qualification. Your professional experience demonstrates a strong interest in scientific drawings, ideally in the field of archaeology or cultural heritage.
• You have proven experience in archaeology, particularly in graphic documentation, not only in the field but also in enhancement (plans/finds).
• You are proficient in common graphic applications, especially the Adobe Suite. You have good knowledge of geographic information systems (ArcGIS) and/or digital photogrammetry. You also master an office software suite and common internet usage.
• You are characterised by a positive demeanour and show willingness to integrate and work in a team, while also demonstrating initiative and independence.
• You hold a driving licence and ideally have your own vehicle.
• You are proficient in French or German and have good knowledge of the other language.
