The Department of Health and its employees take on diverse tasks in the areas of health promotion and prevention, health police duties, containment of communicable diseases, outpatient and inpatient health care, networking of decision-makers in the health sector, animal health, and consumer protection.

The Office for Health Care is responsible for ensuring adequate hospital care for the population of St. Gallen, hospital financing, approval and determination of tariffs, as well as premium reductions.
