The Office for Archaeology of the Canton of Fribourg (AAFR) identifies, inventories and documents archaeological cultural assets. It accompanies the administrative procedures concerning archaeological monuments located in archaeological zones and provides resources to carry out excavations and, if necessary, to preserve archaeological monuments. It enhances the created documentation in the form of publications. To raise awareness among various target groups about the richness of the archaeological heritage, the Office organises open days as well as lectures and exhibitions; it also participates in training.

Your tasks

• You take responsibility for the Medieval and Building Archaeology sector of the AAFR and contribute together with the other sector managers and the management to fulfilling the service tasks.
• You coordinate the identification, recording, protection, preservation, documentation, analysis, research, archiving, valorisation and communication of the relevant archaeological cultural assets and primarily take on administrative and operational tasks. You regularly carry out several tasks and projects simultaneously.
• You lead the sector from a managerial perspective, set priorities and steer the operational business, report and represent your area of activity publicly.
• Together with the scientific director, who will later be subordinate to you, you ensure a balanced fulfilment of the sector mandate.
• You create and maintain the framework conditions for the operation of your sector and the personnel deployed there, taking into account the needs of the service.

Desired profile

• You have a Master’s degree in Archaeology, a Swiss federal certificate as an excavation technician or an equivalent recognised qualification. You quickly grasp the challenges of preserving the archaeological heritage from the Middle Ages and the built cultural heritage of the Canton of Fribourg.
• You have excellent references in planning, organising and operational management of preventive archaeology measures, whose processes you master, ideally also at administrative and financial levels.
• Thanks to your experience, skills and expertise, you are able to lead and carry out impact assessments and preventive measures as well as write archaeological reports. These form the basis for scientific evaluations, enhancement and communication of the cultural heritage.
• You have proven leadership and team management skills.
• You communicate confidently and maintain good relationships with the staff of your sector, the service and external contacts. You are solution-oriented, dynamic and enjoy working in a team. You care about maintaining a calm and constructive working environment.
• Your professional network enables you to interact and communicate with specialists in your field of activity.
• You master the common methods, instruments and tools – both analogue and digital – used in the field of activity.
• You have good language skills and a high level of written expression. You are German- or French-speaking with good knowledge of the partner language.
• You hold a driving licence.
