Operational management of the highly technical buildings of the University of Basel
The University of Basel is a university of international renown, delivering excellent performance in research and teaching. Providing reliable infrastructure for teaching & research is one of the essential success factors of the university. The Campus Services Natural & Life Sciences department ensures the operation and maintenance of the infrastructures for the Biozentrum, Biomedicine and Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences at the three locations Schällemätteli, Rosental, and Allschwil. The infrastructures cover more than 100,000 square metres of floor space, 4,000 rooms, and include a high proportion of Bio-Safety-Level 2 laboratories, animal facilities, chemical, physical and laser laboratories, as well as associated teaching, practical, and learning rooms. Building operations are characterised by constant dynamism with various projects. Operational management is outsourced to private companies in the form of integrated facility services.
The current and ongoing project volume due to new buildings, energy management, and digitalisation by campus management requires strengthening of operational management. For this, we are looking for you as Head of Building Services.

Your tasks
- Act as the central contact person for the operational services of the facility services providers and maintain active regular communication with users and service partners,
- Disciplinary and professional leadership of the three department employees responsible for operational management as well as coordination and control of maintenance, repair, conversion, and modernisation work at the Schällemätteli and Rosental sites,
- Operational management of the contracted facility services providers,
- Coordination of work with users when necessary and documentation based on comprehensive use of the developed IT systems,
- Inform affected and responsible organisational units (internal and external) about damages, defects, and malfunctions and initiate immediate measures to prevent personal, material, and economic damage,
- Continuous updating of internal departmental documents and data in IT systems as well as delivery and maintenance of defined data in the energy monitoring system and implementation of defined energy measures.
Your profile
- Successfully completed higher education in facility management or business administration or completed technical basic training EFZ with further education in facility management,
- At least five years of professional experience in a comparable position at a facility services provider or in building operations of a pharmaceutical or chemical industrial company,
- Understanding of service processes and complex contract structures,
- Knowledge of relevant applicable standards and guidelines,
- Good MS Office skills and solid experience with the use and further development of CAFM systems,
- Strong service and solution orientation, good communication skills, professional, friendly, and confident manner,
- Teamwork and assertiveness, negotiation skills and independence,
- Good English skills.
