Tasks

• The project «Espaces Croisés: Building Culture Contact Zones at the Swiss Language Border since 1960» is based at the Urban Landscape Institute of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZHAW (Prof. Dr Maxime Zaugg) and at the Historical Institute of the University of Bern (Prof. Dr Silvia Berger Ziauddin). It includes two doctoral positions as well as one postdoc position. The project examines how, since the 1960s, an independent planning culture has developed along the Swiss German/French language border ("Röstigraben"), which materialises in architecture and urban planning, becomes visible and negotiable in social practices, and today exhibits specific building cultural characteristics (for more information on the project see https://www.zhaw.ch/de/forschung/projekt/80395 ). The postdoc project based at the Urban Landscape Institute of the ZHAW is responsible for the scientific synthesis of the case studies, the coordination of the overall project, and the development of central research and communication formats, including scientific publications, workshops, an exhibition and a digital building culture atlas.

• Collaboration and coordination in the SNSF research project "Espaces Croisés: Building Culture Contact Zones at the Swiss Language Border since 1960"
• Independent research on architecture, urban planning and building culture history within the thematic framework of the project
• Scientific support and professional exchange with the PhD candidates of the project
• Collaboration in the conception and development of a digital atlas of the Swiss language border and its building cultural interrelations
• Collaboration in the conception, research and implementation of an exhibition within the framework of the research project
• Collaboration in the organisation of workshops, excursions, conferences and research formats
• Cooperation with national and international research partners
• Participation in the activities of the Urban Landscape Institute (IUL)

Profile

• You hold a completed doctorate in architecture, architectural history/theory, urban history, urban studies or a related discipline.
• You have an independent research profile in the field of architecture, urban planning, cultural or spatial research.
• Good language skills in German, French and English are an advantage; however, knowledge of all three languages is not required.
• You have experience with scientific publications and presentations in international contexts.
• You are interested in interdisciplinary questions at the interface of architecture, city, landscape, building culture and society.
• You are interested in participating in a multi-year, collaborative research project.
• Experience in exhibitions, digital communication formats or cartographic/digital methods is an advantage.
• A residence in Switzerland is required for the duration of the project.
