About the job
As a Lead Frontend Engineer with a focus on frontend, you shape the technical direction of our eCommerce platform exactly where architecture, developer experience, and conversion intersect. You work across teams and domains, set standards for the entire frontend landscape, and ensure that our independently deployable systems (Self-Contained Systems / Micro-Frontends) deliver a consistent, fast, and accessible customer experience—without restricting the autonomy of the teams. You lead through technical excellence rather than a reporting line: At our Principal Engineer level (Individual Contributor Track), you take on technical leadership and act as a coach, role model, and sparring partner for engineers, team leads, and our domain architecture.
Lead Frontend Engineer
What to expect
- You are responsible for the frontend architecture across multiple teams and domains—from the storefront through checkout and search to account and loyalty flows.
- You establish and develop our standards for React, TypeScript, and Server-Side Rendering (SSR) as well as for micro-frontend integration, design system, and shared component foundations.
- You drive web performance and Core Web Vitals as direct levers for conversion: rendering strategies (SSR / streaming / edge), bundle budgets, caching, and frontend observability (real user monitoring).
- You remove blockers that slow down the entire engineering organisation—from productive local development through tooling and build pipelines to architectural misalignments.
- You ensure that security, accessibility (a11y), and privacy by default are lived throughout the entire frontend landscape.
- You represent our technical direction externally—in the tech community and towards leadership and budget holders.
You strongly identify with a culture where
- Technical full-stack thinking, pair programming, whiteboard sessions, code reviews, automated testing, and CI/CD with multiple productive releases per day are normal. Teams take genuine end-to-end responsibility in the spirit of "You build it, you run it."
- Servant leadership, constructive feedback, and the targeted development of people and organisation belong together.
- Product engineering collaborates with engineering, seeks to understand problems in depth, lives true agility, focuses on MVPs, short iterations, and rapid learning, and consistently makes decisions from a user and business perspective.
What you bring
- You bring deep expertise in modern frontend: React and TypeScript at production level, solid experience with SSR (server-side rendering, e.g. with Next.js, Remix, or a comparable setup), micro-frontends / self-contained systems, and a keen sense for web performance, Core Web Vitals, and accessibility.
- You have experience in domains such as account, product data, checkout, or user-generated content, or you are generally well versed in the e-commerce environment.
- You not only know the described culture but live it, coach it, anchor it in the organisation, and contribute to a strong team culture with appreciative communication, warmth, and a good dose of humour.
- You are a great coach and role model for engineers, team leads, and the organisation—without formal authority, but with professional authority and personal connection.
- You approach complex topics with perseverance and resilience and are perceived as a motivating beacon even in challenging situations.
- You define the AI tooling strategy for the frontend, create the architectural prerequisites, and establish best software practices, for example through automated code reviews. Tools like Claude Code are effectively used in the teams’ daily work—and you ensure that AI-generated code respects design system boundaries.
- You confidently apply frontend-specific patterns—component-driven development, design systems, state management, and edge/server rendering—and establish them in a structured way across teams.
- You make data-driven decisions: Core Web Vitals, conversion, flaky tests, and technical debt are signals, not goals. You understand OKRs as a tool to deliberately extend your influence across teams.
- You bring at least 10 years of experience in modern software development with a strong focus on frontend, including at least 2 years in a technical leadership or architecture role.
- You speak German and/or English.
We probably do not fit well together if you
- Prefer frameworks like SAFe or think in classic project structures and specifications.
- Have mainly worked in highly regulated environments and have little experience in fast, product-oriented organisations with large distributed systems.
- Feel more comfortable in role models where infrastructure, backend, frontend, testing, and product thinking are strictly separated.
- Prefer to receive requirements fully formed rather than refining them together with product management and truly understanding customers.
- Do not have an insatiable thirst for knowledge to continuously learn new things.
- Are more frustrated than motivated by imperfect systems—spoiler: we are not there yet.
- Strictly separate work and good humour.
