The Army Staff (A Staff) supports the Chief of the Army in leading the Department of Defense and is responsible for the military overall planning and development of the Swiss Army. Here, the strategic foundations, force development, and army and armament planning are developed according to political guidelines, and tasks in the international security context are carried out. The leadership, management, and coordination of all overarching cross-sectional areas (personnel, finance, real estate) also fall within the responsibility of the Army Staff.
The Swiss Army employs over 9,000 employees in four military and around 200 civilian professions – and this at 140 locations across Switzerland. The Swiss Army also takes care of the next generation: it trains apprentices in over 30 professions.
