The Medical Faculty of the University of Basel and the University Hospital Basel (USB) are looking for a professor of ophthalmology at the University of Basel as of 01.11.2026 or by arrangement, combined with the position of Chief Physician of the Eye Clinic at USB.
The Eye Clinic is part of the Department of Head Organs, Musculoskeletal System and Neuromedicine of the University Hospital Basel and is the central ophthalmological university care facility for Northwestern Switzerland and the scientifically complementary clinical partner of the "Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB)" active in ophthalmological basic research.
Your Tasks
You are responsible as head and chief physician of the Eye Clinic of the University Hospital Basel for the further development of the Eye Clinic and the ophthalmological emergency department and ensure a high-quality inpatient and outpatient ophthalmological care at USB and thus for the entire region as well as outstanding university teaching and research.Through your clinical expertise and research background, you strengthen the national and international visibility of ophthalmology at the University of Basel and the University Hospital Basel.
Your clinical expertise and your interest in medical training ensure and promote modern training and further education of ophthalmological assistant and senior physicians according to the guidelines of the Swiss Institute for Medical Continuing and Further Education (SIWF). With your commitment to university research and teaching, you inspire students for your field and promote academic junior staff in ophthalmology. Your participative, goal-oriented leadership style ensures an attractive working environment for academic and clinical specialists. You lead an ophthalmological research group and create a fertile environment for a successful research team. Through institutional embedding in the IOB, you contribute to further increasing the national and international scientific impact of the Eye Clinic and the IOB.
Your Profile
You have many years of clinical expertise in ophthalmology with a specialty preferably in the field of retinal diseases. Broad surgical experience in all areas of ophthalmology and especially in retinal surgery is highly desired. You demonstrate successful own clinical research activity, including competitive third-party funding acquisition, in a research area of ophthalmology, preferably in the field of retinal diseases. You have proven leadership experience and ability to cooperate in an academic environment. Thanks to your pronounced expertise in clinic and research, your leadership and communication skills as well as your high social competence, you gain acceptance and trust among employees, research partners and referrers. You create an attractive working environment, inspire creative thinking and action, and promote your employees. You have very good German and English skills.We Offer You
