The Army Staff (A Stab) supports the Chief of the Army in leading the Department of Defense and is responsible for the overall military planning and development of the Swiss Army. Here, the strategic foundations, force development, and army and armament planning are developed according to political guidelines, as well as tasks in the international security context. The leadership, management, and coordination of all cross-sectional areas (personnel, finance, real estate) also fall within the responsibility of the Army Staff.
The Swiss Army employs over 9,000 staff in four military and around 200 civilian professions – and this at 140 locations across Switzerland. There is also provision for the next generation: The Swiss Army trains apprentices in over 30 professions.
