The Central Library Zurich is the cantonal, city, and university library and one of the largest libraries in Switzerland. As a public foundation, it is supported by the city and canton of Zurich. In its role as a university library, it cooperates closely with the University Library Zurich. With its mission, it fulfils an important role for the successful education and science location Zurich: it makes the available knowledge accessible to science and the public, thus setting accents on the path to the knowledge society.

For our Department of Training and Further Education, we are looking for two trainees from 01.06.2027 until 31.05.2029 on a fixed-term basis.

Trainee Positions as Scientific Librarians (100%)

Your Tasks

Over two years, you will get to know the diverse tasks of a large scientific library and actively work in different areas of the Central Library Zurich. We look forward to curious personalities who want to actively shape the CL with their ideas, perspectives, and skills.

• Getting to know and working in the essential departments of the Central Library Zurich as well as gradually taking on responsibility in various teams.
• Contributing to services, offers, and projects for students, researchers, and the public, as well as bringing in your own ideas and perspectives for their further development.
• Engaging with topics such as information supply, digital offerings, collections, mediation, and research support.
• Linking the content of the part-time MAS course in Library and Information Science with practical experience ( https://www.biw.uzh.ch/de/masbiw.html ).
• Completing supplementary internships at home and abroad.

Your Profile

• University degree (Master’s level or licentiate).
• Demonstrated interest in the current role of scientific libraries in research, education, and society, as well as in information technologies and digital media.
• Openness to new developments and willingness to contribute your own ideas and perspectives.
• Enjoyment of target-group-appropriate communication and collaboration with different stakeholders.
• Familiarity with scientific work and enjoyment of conceptual questions.
• Analytical and critical thinking skills as well as willingness for constructive further development of offers and services.
• Strong service orientation and independence, high team and cooperation skills, as well as flexibility.

Our Offer

We offer you a varied internship with structured training within the framework of the part-time MAS in Library and Information Science. You will be accompanied by experienced professionals and go through different areas of the CL. This way, you will experience the Central Library Zurich from various perspectives and work in a collegial environment with professionals from different disciplines. Additionally, you will gain practical experience in one or two external short internships at home and abroad. A workplace in the centre of Zurich completes our offer. The employment conditions are based on the personnel regulations of the canton of Zurich.
