Switch is the digitalisation partner of Swiss universities and a non-profit foundation. With around 180 employees, we develop digital solutions for teaching and research and strengthen Switzerland's digital sovereignty. Our collaboration is based on trust, personal responsibility, and professional exchange between different roles and disciplines. We focus on sustainable solutions, transparent decisions, and a working style where thinking along and co-creating are encouraged.
Cloud Engineer Compute (80-100% - all identities and backgrounds*) in Zurich or Lausanne
You will become part of the CURE (Cloud and Undercloud Reliability Engineering) circle, a team of around 10 people working collaboratively and agilely. The team language is mainly English. Together, they develop and operate the research cloud of tomorrow for the Swiss university and research landscape. Their focus is on stable, secure, and scalable cloud services as well as an engineering culture where collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement are a matter of course.
These are your main responsibilities in this role:
- You operate and further develop the OpenStack-based compute platform of our SwitchCloud. You design technical solutions, accompany upgrades, and support capacity planning as well as long-term technical development. In doing so, you implement security standards and coordinate technical changes within a reliable and transparent change management process
- You analyse and solve complex technical problems across compute, storage, and networking and work in 2nd-/3rd-level support. You further develop monitoring and alerting, recognise trends and risks early, and continuously improve the reliability of our services based on operational experience and direct customer feedback
- You develop and maintain automations for deployment, configuration management, and ongoing operations. You design processes efficiently, reproducibly, and maintainably, document technical changes and operational procedures comprehensibly, and support other engineers through active knowledge transfer
- A university degree in computer science (university, university of applied sciences, higher vocational school) or comparable qualifications with corresponding professional experience
- At least five years of practical experience in engineering and productive operation of OpenStack as well as experience in securing the platform and technical troubleshooting. You work independently, take responsibility, and develop sustainable solutions together with the team
- Strong technical expertise in OpenStack, solid Linux knowledge, and good programming skills in Python. You bring experience with infrastructure automation, especially Ansible, as well as with Git/GitLab and Docker. Basic knowledge of Kubernetes and an understanding of monitoring, reliability engineering, and service level objectives (SLOs) complement your profile
- Fluent English skills as well as German skills or the willingness to acquire them independently
Not strictly necessary, but we would be pleased if you also bring the following:
- Experience with site reliability engineering and provisioning workflows as well as the willingness to participate in the further development of OpenStack in the community
- At Switch, we communicate on equal terms, so it is important to us that we use the informal "you" from the first contact
- We live collaboration and see lifelong learning as the key to success
- As a digitalisation and innovation service provider, we shape the Swiss university environment of tomorrow
- Our flexible working hours and hybrid working model enable a high compatibility of work and everyday life; important details can be found here
- Bilingualism is part of our DNA; Switchies naturally switch between German and English in everyday life. To ensure everyone reaches a comfortable language level, we offer support and language training
- Our offices are centrally located and easily accessible by public transport. You can work in Zurich directly at Stauffacher or in Lausanne at the EPFL Innovation Park
