Senior ICT Database Engineer (80-100%)

On behalf of our client from the telecommunications sector, we are seeking an experienced Senior ICT Database Engineer (m/f/d) with proven expertise in consulting and supporting the migration from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL. The ideal candidate has 8-10 years of solid professional experience as a Database Engineer, Database Architect, or DBA and brings several years of practical experience with PostgreSQL in enterprise environments. You can expect an innovative and strategically relevant project with high management attention as well as international collaboration between teams in Switzerland and the Netherlands.

For this role, negotiation-level German and English skills at C1 level are required. Knowledge of Swiss German (at least B1 level) is an advantage.

Your tasks

• Consulting and support for the migration from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL
• Definition, conception, and review of target architectures for PostgreSQL-based environments
• Analysis of existing database landscapes, data models, and workloads
• Planning and execution of database migrations including migration strategy and cutover concepts
• Evaluation and optimisation of database performance (query tuning, resource consumption)
• Conducting sizing, capacity, and scaling analyses
• Consulting on high availability, disaster recovery, as well as backup and restore strategies
• Migration of database objects (e.g. stored procedures, views, functions, triggers)
• Identification of SQL Server-specific dependencies and definition of suitable PostgreSQL target implementations
• Support with test concepts, migration tests, and performance tests
• Creation of technical documentation and best practices
• Ensuring knowledge transfer to internal teams and the operations organisation

Your profile

• Completed studies (university of applied sciences/university) or comparable qualification
• At least 8-10 years of experience as a Database Engineer, Database Architect, or DBA
• Several years of practical experience with PostgreSQL in enterprise environments
• Proven project experience in migrations from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL
• Very good knowledge in:
  • PostgreSQL architecture and internals
  • Query optimisation and performance tuning
  • Indexing strategies and partitioning
  • High availability and replication
  • Backup and recovery concepts
  • Capacity planning and sizing
  • Experience with migration tools and database assessment methods
  • Ability to identify technical risks early and derive appropriate measures
• Nice to have
  • Experience with ITSM platforms and enterprise applications
  • Experience in regulated enterprise environments
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with PostgreSQL enterprise solutions and extended distributions
  • Knowledge of CI/CD and DevOps practices in the database environment
