In a nutshell
The Bilateral Economic Relations division is part of the Directorate for Foreign Economic Affairs in the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs. In addition to maintaining bilateral economic relations with other countries, the division is also responsible for export control of industrial and military goods as well as the implementation of sanctions. The Sanctions unit is responsible for implementing international coercive measures in Switzerland. These are decisions of the UN Security Council or those of Switzerland's main trading partners. The unit is also responsible for controlling the international trade in rough diamonds in Switzerland.
The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) is the federal competence center for all core issues of economic and labor market policy and belongs to the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER). It promotes international market opening for goods, services, and investments. To reduce poverty, SECO is engaged in economic development cooperation. It plans economic and trade policy measures in favor of developing countries, Eastern European and Central Asian countries, as well as the new member states of the European Union (EU).
