It conducts the preliminary proceedings, investigates offences, brings charges if necessary, and represents these charges in court. In minor cases, it issues a penalty order. Organisationally, the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Canton of Bern consists of the Office of the Attorney General, three public prosecutor's offices for the entire canton (one for the prosecution of economic crimes, one for special tasks, and one for juvenile criminal matters), as well as four regional public prosecutor's offices (Berner Jura-Seeland, Emmental-Oberaargau, Bern-Mittelland and Oberland).
