About the job

As of 1.2.2027, a professorship (100%) in History of the Middle Ages with consideration of digital methods (open rank)
is to be filled at the Historical Institute of the University of Bern.
The holder of the position should represent the field of History of the Middle Ages (approx. 500–1500) in its full breadth in research and teaching and promote the application of digital methods in research and teaching. He/she brings at least two focus areas in the field of European medieval history documented by internationally visible publications. A broad coverage of European history, especially of the High and Late Middle Ages, taking into account interregional interconnections and contact zones, is desired.

The holder of the position also shows willingness to actively contribute to the development of the trans-epochal research clusters at the Historical Institute, especially leading in the "Digital History" cluster. Further commitment is expected in the interdisciplinary master's program "Digital Humanities" of the Walter Benjamin College. In addition to a thematically and methodologically broad teaching offer amounting to 4 (assistant professorship) or 8 (associate and full professorship) semester hours per week and supervision of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral theses, participation in academic self-administration and cooperation with other disciplines are expected.

Depending on the qualification of the successful candidate, the position will be filled at the level of assistant professorship with tenure track, associate professorship, or full professorship. Prerequisites for an assistant professorship are an above-average dissertation, teaching experience, and the existence of an advanced habilitation project. Upon successful evaluation, there is the prospect of permanent employment and conversion of the position into an associate professorship. Prerequisites for an associate or full professorship are habilitation or an equivalent qualification as well as experience in successfully acquiring third-party funding.
