Principal EHS Specialist (f/m/d)
About the Role
As a Principal EHS Specialist (f/m/d), you will support the Bern site in all central topics of health, safety and environmental management.
You bring profound EHS expertise, strong shopfloor proximity as well as the ability to coach leaders, teams and EHS colleagues and support their development. In doing so, you combine operational presence with strategic thinking and make a significant contribution to the further development of our health, safety and environmental culture.
This role is aimed at experienced EHS professionals who want to use their expertise not only to solve problems but also to actively contribute to the development of people, teams and organisations.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities
Coaching, Mentoring and Culture Development
- Coach and sparring partner for leaders, employees and EHS professionals
- Support for the professional development of EHS team members
- Promotion of an open learning, feedback and safety culture
- Conveying best practices and lessons learned
- Supporting leaders in fulfilling their EHS responsibilities
- Promoting ownership and a sustainable safety culture at all levels
- Contribution to the further development of the EHS organisation at the site
Presence on Site and Shopfloor Support
- Regular presence in production, engineering, laboratories, logistics and support areas
- Conducting safety, health and environmental walks
- Support of the tier meeting structure (Tier 1 to Tier 3)
- Identification of improvement opportunities in daily operations
- Support of teams in implementing effective protective measures
- Promotion of proactive risk and safety awareness
Health Protection and Occupational Health
- Identification and assessment of health-relevant risks
- Support on topics such as ergonomics, exposures, noise, climate and mental health
- Collaboration with medical services and external specialists
- Support of health monitoring programmes
- Development and implementation of appropriate prevention measures
- Promotion of health-promoting workplaces and wellbeing initiatives
Environmental Management
- Support and further development of environmental management processes
- Involvement in topics such as:
- waste management
- emission control
- energy efficiency
- wastewater
- hazardous substance management
- resource management
- sustainability initiatives
- Support of ISO 14001-compliant processes
- Conducting environmental walks
- Support of environmental audits and regulatory inspections
Hazard Identification and Prevention
- Systematic identification of health, safety and environmental risks
- Conducting risk assessments and task risk assessments
- Support in the evaluation and prioritisation of risks
- Review of the effectiveness of existing protective measures
- Support in the development of sustainable prevention measures
- Maintenance of relevant EHS risk registers
- Facilitation of more complex risk analyses as needed
Incident Investigation and Continuous Improvement
- Leading or supporting investigations of EHS incidents, pSIFs and environmental events
- Application of structured investigation methods such as ICAM, RCA or TapRooT
- Identification of sustainable improvement measures
- Integration of lessons learned into processes, standards and training
- Promotion of an open and learning-oriented error culture
Systems Thinking and EHS Governance
- Consideration of interrelations between people, technology, organisation and environment
- Contribution to the further development of EHS processes and standards
- Participation in site-wide improvement programmes and strategic initiatives
- Development of sustainable solutions for root cause elimination
- Support of the EHS operating model and EHS governance
Requirements and Qualifications
Professional Experience
- At least 7 years of professional experience in environment, health & safety
- Experience in regulated industries such as pharma, biotech or chemicals is an advantage
- Experience in accompanying, developing or professionally supporting employees and leaders
- Experience in implementing EHS programmes and improvement initiatives
- Proven ability to influence and successfully manage change
Education
Higher educational qualification, for example:
- MSc / MAS Safety Engineering
- MSc Environmental Engineering
- MSc Process Engineering
- MSc Life Sciences
- Natural sciences degree or comparable field
Further training in occupational health, environmental management, coaching or leadership is an advantage.
Professional Competences
- Very good knowledge of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001
- Experience in hazard identification and risk assessment
- Knowledge of health, safety and environmental management
- Experience with hazardous substances and regulatory requirements
- Knowledge of EHS management systems, reporting and risk management tools
- Experience with methods such as HAZOP, FMEA or Bow Tie is an advantage
