Job Description:

The Head of Group Risk Office – Power & Gas is a member of the Risk team, reporting to the Global Head of Risk, and will act as the primary global risk management point of contact for the various power & gas trading desks.  Working closely with Traders & Risk officers globally, he/she will provide advisory services to help manage every aspect of global risk activities and will be responsible for identifying, reporting, and managing the risk(s) of the global respective portfolios; and will be expected to foster a culture of Risk across Gunvor. A key aspect of this role is to be a global strategic partner in supporting the growth of the Trading business identifying and helping to manage and monitor the Risks & PnL of Gunvor Power & Gas desks.

Main Responsilibities

  • Recruits, directs, develops, and coaches a large global team of Risk Officers to ensure that the necessary resources are in place to effectively support the objectives of Management for the Risk function.

  • Develops Risk Office policies and procedures. Ensures that such policies and procedures are updated as required, are understood by Risk and Middle Office and that instances of non-compliance are identified, escalated, and resolved as necessary, in coordination with Global Head of Risk and products team.

  • Monitors globally trading activity to ensure it is in line or developing within the parameters set by Management and recommends corrective actions.

  • Responsible for the global management reporting and accuracy of the P&L.

  • Communicate effectively with Front Office, Operation, Trade Support, Finance and IT team on inputs and assumptions.

  • Prepare various reports and analysis for publishing internally and to the Management Board as the case may be.

  • Apply and conducts quantitative and qualitative analysis of the market and portfolios to provide value adding decision support.

  • Reviews new trading strategies and/or structured transactions.

  • Identifies and proposes tools and processes required to measure monitor and control risk in line with any parameters set by Management.

  • Work closely with Back Office, Finance, Credit, Legal & Compliance, Business Unit Control to ensure best control practices, operational efficiency and policy/limit compliance.

  • Coordinate with Compliance to ensure compliance requirements are met.

  • Develops and maintains good relationships with external service providers and peers.

  • Identify and implement enhancements to risk metrics and system. Support, identify, and assist in implement of process improvement, from system testing and implementations to desk level process.

  • Identify and investigate issues of non-compliance with limits within the business units, flag issues of non-compliance to the Global Head of Risk.

  • Accountable for y relevant project management assigned including but not limited to planning and allocating resources, preparing budgets, monitoring progress, setting quality and performance standards, assessing risks and keeping stakeholders informed throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Represents Risk-department in either project governance meetings and/or credit committee

  • Advises business unit and support groups on workflow and data process flows.

  • Establish productive partnerships focused on risk with business units.

  • Supports the Head of Market & Quantitative Risk

IT and systems

  • Provides leadership skills, advice, and assistance to IT in maintain the system(s).

  • Assessment and advisory services on system development and procurement.

  • Keep up to date on risk and risk technology developments.

Administrative and other functions

  • Approve/facilitate access and set exchanges limits for the traders/business.

  • Manage user access rights for Reuters, Ice, Argus, Platts or similar.

  • Approve new products traded.

  • Assist Compliance group and regulatory initiatives and reporting.

  • Assist Accounting group in monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliation.

  • Assist internal and external auditors.

  • Aid external auditors to better understand valuation methodologies.

  • Liaise with operation groups to identify operational Risk issues and implement risk mitigating initiatives.

Administrative and other functions

  • Manage user access rights for Reuters, Ice, Argus, Platts or similar

Profile/Key Skills

  • University degree, preferably in Computing, Mathematics, Engineering, Economics or Finance.

  • A total of 10+ years relevant experience or in a similar role in the commodity trading business, preferably within a major trading house, an oil major, investment bank or hedge fund.

  • High professional knowledge of analytics tools and technologies.

  • Comprehensive understanding of risk management methodologies and valuation models

  • Track record in successfully leading optimization projects and experience in process design and process improvement is a must in an international environment.

  • Entrepreneurial spirit, naturally curious and proactive.

  • Demonstrate and inspire integrity and professionalism.

  • Can do attitude / driven, self-motivated and goal orientated.

  • Team player; able to build relationships across the company.

  • Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills.

  • High degree of accuracy and efficiency under set deadlines.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, VBA and other data analysis tools (Python and SQL is a plus)

  • Good knowledge of Access and SQL Server

  • Fluent in English & French, both written and spoken, any other European language is a plus
